Practicing Lesson Plan Objectives - Patricia Dowling

Our Foundations class has been practicing writing lesson plan objectives. Patricia Dowling (a FasTrack student) had a great set of objectives and procedures followed by a great method of assessment. Check it out:

Objectives
  • Students will be able to define and describe 3 symptoms of a mental illness
  • Students will be able to explain how symptoms of a mental illness could affect a person who has this illness’s daily life
  • Students will be able to identify one type of treatment for the chosen mental illness
 Procedure
  • Divide the students into four groups by numbering off.
  • Have each group volunteer who will be their scribe, IPad operator, and facilitator.
  • Give each group a worksheet
  • Have each group pick a mental illness paper, which includes definition of mental illness, symptoms, and reputable websites for more information.
  • Give students 15 minutes fill in the worksheet that asked for the name of disease, 3 symptoms, a treatment for their chosen mental illness (treatment option would be found by looking up illness on one of websites) and a daily life task that could be affected by symptoms of this illness.
  • Have 2 members of each group present their daily life scenario of how their chosen mental illness could affect the person with this mental illnesses life in a short 3 minute skit. Skit should depict the scenario of the daily task affected.
  • Have each group offer their suggestion of a type of treatment for this illness at the end of the skit.
Assessment
Assessment of objectives will be done by going through the worksheets of each group to see if the information was completely and correctly filled out. Each group’s skit will be assessed to see if symptoms of the mental illness were shown and if they were accurate to how the illness could affect a daily task.

Content Standards - Kara DeVriendt

A question Dr. Bridges asked our Introduction to Foundations students was, "What are the standards? What are their purposes? How do they help the teacher do his/her work?" Here was a great post by Kara DeVriendt, one of our FasTrack students:

Content Standards standardize what students are learning in a specific subject in a specific grade.  My mentor is on her second year teaching Language Arts with a prescribed curriculum to meet content standards.  She says it is necessary to make sure all the students in the grade are coming out with the same knowledge, regardless of the teacher (if there is more than one teacher for the content in the grade).  She also said she likes it because it holds teachers accountable (to parents, administrators) instead of just doing their own thing whether or not it is keeping kids on track with what they should be learning.  In order to measure whether content standards are being met, benchmarks are put in place, like stepping stones, a student has to be steady on the first stone before jumping to second and so on.  It creates a sequential, structured process for learning new information and is consistent with using ZPD. -Kara DeVriendt

A student's view of the PEDL program

This Gloster was created by a previous PEDL student to give a brief overview of some of the unique experiences Fastrack and Dlite students will encounter throughout the program.
